Fishing Report:

Fishing Update Friday, February 5, 2010

Streams; Maxwell Creek has a great flow of water, and the shoreline is safe with very little ice. Steelhead is the targeted species, and egg sacks are the best. The colors on a winter rainbow are very vivid.

Bays; The norm is 8 to 10 inches of safe ice on all the bays. Stay away from bubblers or other open water. There are plenty of access points where you don’t have to take chances on ice that is unstable, or areas that you are not familiar with.

Follow the crowds, and then branch-out when you know the thickness.

The ice is safe; however the fishing has been very spotty. Usually perch will follow a pattern in February. That has not happened yet.

The south end of Sodus is a good destination for perch. Use small jigs with spikes, and be prepared to stay awhile if you want fish.

The same situation applies at Port Bay. Two perch every 2 hours seems to be the catch rate. I guess you need to wait for the hits. Lately, it has been a late bite. The jumbos turn on at 10 am, and then disappear until around noon.

Some perch have been caught on Blind Sodus Bay. They were in 15 feet of water near the south of the bay.

Canal; The canal is frozen at Widewaters, and the ice has been safe since December.

Conditions change quickly.
